Annual Charity Boule Tournament is a Big Hit

The popular annual Bournemouth North Rotary Club’s Charity Petanque Pairs Competition took place at the Merley Sports and Social Club last Sunday (23rd April).  Twenty two teams took part and some excellent boules were thrown throughout the day.

Steve Maidment presented trophies to Novice winners Jon Gracie and Sally Sinn

Teams came from clubs across Dorset and Hampshire and more than £300 was raised for local charities.

The event is very much a fun affair with Tony Bayliss providing his usual superb BBQ bangers and burgers.  He was ably assisted by Peter Avis who looked rather grand in his apron, which looked ominously as though he wears it often. Robbie provided a stunning array of her famous home-made cakes to go with the teas and coffees which she sold on the day ably assisted by Jenny.

The weather was great and a really good time was had by all.

The novice event was won by two youngsters from Parley, Jon Gracie and Sally Sinn, who showed great potential against their more mature and slightly more experienced opponents. The runners up were BNRC’s Charles and Liz Cleghorn, a stunning partnership whose normal prowess appeared to desert them on the day.

President Richard Taylor presented the Trophies to Winners Tony Giordino and Phil Stapleton

The winners of the main event were Tony Giordino and his new partner playing Phil Stapleton who managed to beat the BNRC pairing of Chris Chubb and Graham Green with a great performance in the final.

This is not the first time Tony has won this (and many other events) and he is always a welcome guest, if only to demonstrate how the game should be played.  At least that’s what he tells us!

A big thank you to Steve for all his hard work organising an excellent day. We look forward to next year’s competition.

“CAPRICORN” FUNDRAISER GOES WITH A SWING

Over 100 members and guests enjoyed a great night out at the Village Hotel, Bournemouth on Friday 7th April which raised £1,000 for Dorset Mind.

Angela, John & Robbie – the Rotary Raffle Team

The dinner dance organised by the Rotary Club of Bournemouth North was a great success raising money for this excellent Bournemouth based charity – an independent charitable provider of mental health services working across Dorset, offering support to anyone in the county and facing a mental health problem, or caring for those who already are.

After an excellent meal entertainment was provided by the award winning five piece country and music band “Capricorn.”

MAY DAY FETE TO BE OPENED BY BBC SOUTH TODAY PRESENTER ED SAULT

BBC SOUTH TODAY’S PRESENTER ED SAULT HAS AGREED TO PERFORM THE OPENING CEREMONY AT THE BNRC MAY DAY DONKEY DERBY, DOG SHOW AND FETE  AT PELHAMS PARK, KINSON ON AT 11.30 am MONDAY MAY 1ST

The annual May Bank Holiday Monday Donkey Derby, Dog Show and Fete at Pelhams Park, Kinson, which has been organised by the Rotary Club of Bournemouth North for over 30 years, is fast approaching. A great day out for people of the area with so many attractions this event raises thousands of pounds for local charities each year.

This year the opening ceremony will be carried out by BBC South Today’s popular presenter Ed Sault so come early for a chance to meet and speak to Ed.

AFC Bournemouth’s Cherry Bear will also be visiting the event during the afternoon so don’t miss the opportunity to have your photo taken with the Premiership Clubs famous mascot.

The event is open from 11.30am until 4.30pm.

In recent years we have been joined by the ‘Caring Canines’ Dog Show and we are delighted that they will be joining us again this year. You will find them alongside the tennis courts so please give them a visit and take your dog along for some of the fun entries. Entries £1.00 per class payable on entry into the ring. Judging from 12.00 noon.

As usual the Donkey Races will be taking place in the main arena providing lots of fun and entertainment and a big thank you to all the jockeys coming along to help. You can have a small flutter on the races and the younger children can have a donkey ride, which has proved very popular in previous years.

Why not enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake, an ice cream or even one of Chef Tony’s famous beef burgers while you relax and listen to the band.

Over the years we have supported many local groups including Cherry Tree Nursery, Brendon Care Lunch Club, Kinson Food bank, Pelhams Community Group, Bournemouth Blind Society, Woofability (dogs for the disabled), the MS Society at Parley, Kingsley House Dysphasia Support Group, Bournemouth Scouts, Macmillan Caring Locally, Bournemouth Hospital Charity, the Poppy Appeal and lots lots more too numerous to mention. Many of these groups will have stalls on the day so please support them as they are all run by volunteers who give up hundreds of hours each year helping their causes.

Many of the stall will be run by Bournemouth North Rotarians with the help of wives, husbands, partners and friends and so a big thank you to all of them as without their assistance the event could not take place. Why not pick up a bargain book, a delicious cake or some plants for the garden or try your luck on the tombola. Every penny raised goes to support local organisations.
