The popular annual Bournemouth North Rotary Club’s Charity Petanque Pairs Competition took place at the Merley Sports and Social Club last Sunday (23rd April). Twenty two teams took part and some excellent boules were thrown throughout the day.
Teams came from clubs across Dorset and Hampshire and more than £300 was raised for local charities.
The event is very much a fun affair with Tony Bayliss providing his usual superb BBQ bangers and burgers. He was ably assisted by Peter Avis who looked rather grand in his apron, which looked ominously as though he wears it often. Robbie provided a stunning array of her famous home-made cakes to go with the teas and coffees which she sold on the day ably assisted by Jenny.
The weather was great and a really good time was had by all.
The novice event was won by two youngsters from Parley, Jon Gracie and Sally Sinn, who showed great potential against their more mature and slightly more experienced opponents. The runners up were BNRC’s Charles and Liz Cleghorn, a stunning partnership whose normal prowess appeared to desert them on the day.
The winners of the main event were Tony Giordino and his new partner playing Phil Stapleton who managed to beat the BNRC pairing of Chris Chubb and Graham Green with a great performance in the final.
This is not the first time Tony has won this (and many other events) and he is always a welcome guest, if only to demonstrate how the game should be played. At least that’s what he tells us!
A big thank you to Steve for all his hard work organising an excellent day. We look forward to next year’s competition.
